๐Ÿ–จ Decision Letter Printing

This article is out of date. Slate now features two PDF rendering engines; the author has not evaluated the new one.

Generally speaking, there are three pipelines for printing decision letters in Slate.

PDF Export

Pros
Cons
  • Applicants can download lettersย
  • Allows setting margins
  • Can print via a regular color printer on plain paper
  • Not compatible with true, professional letterhead, as you cannot remove the background (unless you give students a PDF without a background). Possible solution.

Decision Letter Export to Word

You can access this method in the query output options of a query on the Application base.

decision query output options.png

Pros

  • Outputs .docx files
  • Can insert page breaks

Cons

Page Breaks

<p style="page-break-before: always">

MDN says that page-break-before has been superseded by break-before, but the latter does not work in Slate.

Mail Merge Word Document

Like Decision Letter Export to Word, this is accessed via query output options <in what base(s)?>.

With this method, the actual letter contents are in a Word template; you would upload the template to a Slate query containing exports for each merge field. This allows a lot of control but requires maintaining decision letter text in both the Word template and the Slate letter templates.
